CITRONELLA AND GORDINA'S BATH
It was another beautiful sunny morning in October and I allowed my two dogs to roam around the garden to relieve themselves. It was a routine. I checked my garden plot while they were busy playing around. I called the dogs back to pet them a little bit after a while. Gordina’s smell indicated it is time for bath.

I decided to give her a bath. I gathered the soap I needed and a pail of water. I noticed the soap that my husband bought smelled terrible. I hesitated for a moment and a thought came to me in a flash. My eyes scanned the garden and I felt the need to add fragrance. I thought of using sampaguita flower at first. It was not available. I settled for citronella instead because of its lemony scent which I liked and it has mosquito repellent properties. What made me feel good about it was that it is natural and gentle. Citronella looks like a lemon grass, and it is being used as an ingredient in lotion, perfume, soap, deodorants and many others. I figured it would not do harm if I experiment with it to mask the unpleasant smell of her soap.

This was the first time
I would do this. I picked just five leaf blades from my garden and cut them
with my garden scissors. I used my kitchen gloves to protect my hands from the
leaves' sharp edges.
I crushed the leaves
first by rubbing them in between my hands. Together with the wet soap, I formed a thick lather. When
the citronella essences burst into the air it gave a fragrance so relaxing. I
also felt good and invigorated. I covered Gordina’s coat evenly and massage her. It worked.
She smelled so fragrant and refreshing as I worked the lather all over her for five minutes. I rinsed her well and she wiggled forcibly to dry herself.

Serendipity. I was
surprised the possibility of the crushed citronella seemed endless. I refused
to throw it away without scrubbing my dog's den with whatever essence is left.
Now, Gordina not just smells fragrant but her favorite little corner smells as
great as well. In addition, mosquitoes will stay away from her. It is natural
and safe. You may want to try it.
I will explore
sampaguita flowers in their next bath.
